Whether you are visiting the West Village of NYC with your dog, or live in the area and just added a furry member to your family, The Village is one of the most fascinating dog walking neighborhoods in the city. It's un-New York layout isn't the normal boring grid layout you typically find elsewhere in the Big Apple. Instead it is filled with things to explore at every turn.
In this article, we will reveal some of our favorite dog walking spots in the West Village that you don't want to miss. Let's get started!
Hudson River Greenway
The Hudson River Greenway is a very popular dog friendly trail that stretches 13 miles along side the Hudson River. There are many access points along the trail, but if you want to do the whole thing, start at Battery Bikeway and finish up under the George Washington Bridge.
There are a few dog friendly parks and even dog runs along the way where fiddo can go leash free.
Dog Friendly Parks
- Hudson River Park
- Riverside Park South
- Riverside Park
- Fort Washington Park
Off-Leash Dog Runs
- West 87th Street
- Pier 84
- Riverside Park
As usual, make sure you clean up after your pet and respect other dog walkers along the way.
Washington Square Park and Dog Run
Washington Square Park and Dog Run is one of the largest dog friendly areas in the West Village area. The dog run is sandy so keep that in mind when you head out there to let your pooch run wild. There is a large dog run and a small dog run so if you've got a tiny companion you won't have to worry about them being crushed by a 100lb St. Bernard.
Yelp reviews has this as one of the most highly rated dog runs in Manhattan. Dog owners and professional dog walkers love the fresh water, expansive area, and relaxed vibe.
Walking around the park with your dog leashed is another good alternative if the dog run is a little full or your pet gets shy around others. All-in-all, you won't go wrong spending an hour or so here letting your dog run with the pack while you sip a latte.
Horatio Street Playground (Corporal John A. Seravalli Playground)
So you're looking for a place to let your pet and kids unwind a bit? Have a stroll over to Horatio Street Playground. This on-leash friendly playground is great for kids who have been cooped up all day and need to get outside.
We recommend making sure you've got a pretty chill dog because kids often want to come "pet your dog".
If you don't have kids and just want to walk your dog, walking the perimeter of the playground is a great idea. Just take a stroll around as your dog sniffs the wall endlessly. Have fun!
Leroy Street Dog Run
Newly rebuilt a few years ago, the Leroy Street Dog Run in Hudson River Park is a favorite for tourists and locals alike. They've got 4 separate dog runs (2 large, 2 small), which keeps the pack size down.
In the summer months, your dog can take a splash in the doggie pool or cool off in the fountain. There is plenty of room for you to sit while you watch your pup run back and forth.
The park and dog run is right on the water so it might not be the best place during the winter months, but fall summer and spring are excellent times to head down to Leroy Street Dog Run.
